Roundup of Food Blog Posts I’ve Enjoyed #6

These are photos of a plantain maple tart tatine I made based on a recipe I found here. The best part was sucking on the split vanilla bean after it had been baked in caramelized maple syrup.

In other news, tomorrow is the deadline for nominating food blogs for the 2006 Food Blog Awards. There are a bunch of different categories where you can nominate blogs. Not to be too proud of my work here or anything, but hey, feel free to head over there and put in a good word for me and all your other favorite food blogs.

This post, however, is an unrelated list of food blog posts that I thought were wonderful and entirely worth going to check out.

Helen made beautiful comfort food, delicata squash stuffed with meats and cranberries. Even the name sounds somehow fanciful to me, like the delicious leftovers you would eat late at night standing up in the kitchen in a fairy castle after returning from the ball.

Stephanie made South African Butternut Squash Soup (with roasted banana!! and curry!!) for our potluck, and it was one of the best dishes there. We all begged her for the recipe, and now it is finally available online. This soup was just spicy enough, very sweet and comforting, and the banana added so much more than I ever would have expected.

Actually, Stephanie has been making a lot of tempting squash dishes lately – I’m also dying to try her Squash Lasagne with Sage and Walnut Pesto and Pomegranate Cheese Sauce.

Lindy made Azerbaian Pilaf with Pomegranate Meatballs. Yum! That’s just my sort of thing! This is high on my to-try list.

Lara wrote about having fun with reflections when doing food photography. As usual, her images are crisp, subtle, and absolutely stunning, and her advice is worth heeding. I credit her blog with a lot of my improvement since I first started doing food photography.

Nicky posted a recipe for strozzapreti, light Italian dumplings made with spinach, ricotta, and parmesan, with a bit of nutmeg and some egg to bind it all together. Demonstrated with beautiful photography as always, this looks like one of those simple recipes that turn out utterly irresistible.

Melissa posted her recipe for kunefe, a dessert involving crisp shredded pastry, sweet cheese, and a rosewater syrup that I have always loved ordering at Turkish restaurants. I never imagined that I could possibly make kunefe at home. Melissa has given me hope. If this recipe tastes anything like the kunefe I have had in that little restaurant (whose name I have forgotten) on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn, I will be very happy indeed.

Deb posted about her tiny, charming wild mushroom pierogi. I’m not really a fan of mushrooms, personally, but I’m very excited about trying out her recipe for the pierogi dough itself.

I found an older recipe for the cutest pistachio, almond, & semolina pears over at The Passionate Cook. They are so cute, with cloves for stems! I am sure to make these at some point, though perhaps with different nuts.

I have a few favorite soup posts from the Super Souper Challenge Roundup – the chicken and dumplings from Cook & Eat look warm and satisfying; Anna‘s Chorizo Chickpea Soup looks vibrantly spicy and flavorful; and who could resist Brilynn‘s Bop it on the Head Boillabaisse?

Elise at Simply Recipes created the dramatic Le Talleyrand, a flaming cherry meringue of a dessert. This is going to be the first thing I try when the weather gets warm and the sour cherry tree ripens again. It is simply stunning.

    how beautiful–lovely glaze, and i love plantains! my family makes up fried plantains wrapped in eggroll wrappers with a bit of jack fruit–yum. i bet they would enjoy this tart tartine–
